Animal of the week|Cicada’s eyes roll like crazy.
Crustaceans or mantis crabs are able to roll their eyes freely in different directions, even one forward and one backward.
The crustacean has 12–16 different types of photoreceptors, and it sees the polarization of light and can sense depth with both eyes separately.
The monster is also known for its lightning-fast strike, which is equivalent to a small-caliber bullet and with which it knocks out its prey.
Eye is a wonderful body. The first eye, a primitive light-sensing structure, is known to have evolved on a microscopic protozoan more than 500 million years ago. This organism did not yet understand what it saw, it only knew how to react to the change of light and dark.
Only later did higher apes develop the ability to express themselves with their eyes and thus express their inner feelings in a complex social environment.
Cicadas certainly have the weakest eyes in the animal kingdom. It twists and turns them into crazy positions every day.
Cicada crustaceansor mantis crabs, are handsome and colorful creatures that live in warm waters. You can see them on coral reefs if you go diving. The eyes of the cicada are at the end of the stalk and the creature can rotate them as much as it likes together or separately, for example to look forward with one and behind with the other.
Cicada’s eyesight is complex and alien to humans. We see colors because we have three different types of cone cells in our eyes. They sense red, blue and green light. Many animals, such as birds, have a fourth type of cell that can see ultraviolet light.
But the cricket has as much 12–16 different photoreceptor type. They see different wavelengths of light in a way we can’t even imagine. The cricket can even see the polarization of light. In addition, the creature can sense depth and distances with both eyes separately.
The cricket can even see the polarization of light.
No know why the cricket has developed such special eyes. Undoubtedly, accurate vision is useful, at least for hunting. Along with rolling their eyes, crickets are known for having a pistol with them in every situation.
When the mantis crab encounters an organism that is foreign to it, its basic reaction is to punch it in the gut. The cricket knocks out its prey with a quick strike that snaps like a gun shot.
The creature extends its forelimbs so quickly that no eye has time to see the blow. It is said that a cicada’s limb strike is equivalent in force to a small-caliber bullet.
The victim is only left to wonder why on earth this had to be done now.
