The evolution of SAR radar technology

The CSG-FM3 satellite represents a fundamental pillar to ensure operational continuity between the first and second generations of radar satellites. The program is based onuse of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology operating in the X band, a solution that allows you to monitor the territory with millimeter precision.

Unlike traditional optical systems, SAR radars are capable of acquiring data “in all weather conditions, day and night”. This feature makes the constellation an indispensable tool for managing emergencies, monitoring climate change and protecting national security. Thanks to its advanced interferometric capabilities, the system allows for stability analyzes and accurate detection of changes, finding application in diversified sectors:

Urban planning and infrastructure: monitoring of structural failures.

Natural resources: management of mining, maritime and oil areas.

Environment: control of forest areas and coastal areas.

The national industrial supply chain

The CSG-FM3 project is the result of an entirely Italian industrial synergy, which involves the main companies in the sector: Thales Alenia Space, responsible for the creation of satellites and the space segment, Telespazio, in charge of the ground segment and the management of control operations, Leonardo, supplier of on-board units and high precision systems and finally e-GEOS, responsible for the distribution and commercial valorisation of data at a global level.

Strategic asset for digital sovereignty

With the addition of CSG-FM3, the constellation will contain five operational satellites (two first generation and three second generation), consolidating a “leadership of radar observation from space” which places Italy in a position of international importance. The dual system — civil and military — allows us to respond simultaneously to institutional defense needs and global challenges related to environmental sustainability.

The integration of this new satellite is not only a technological advancement, but a confirmation of the national supply chain’s ability to integrate “cutting-edge technology, innovation and strategic vision” at the service of the resilience of the territory.
