Smartphone fasting does good. In the United States in the study a two-week break from mobile internet improved the mood, mental health and concentration of the participants.
And the effect was by no means small. The improvement in concentration was equivalent to ten years of rejuvenation. Depressive symptoms decreased more than in treatment studies with antidepressants and as much as with cognitive behavioral therapy.
Texas of McCombs University Adrian Ward and colleagues involved in the study more than 460 adults, whose average age was 32 years.
The participants downloaded an application to their phone that blocks the use of the internet, and with that they stayed away from the phone’s internet for two weeks. During that time, they could still call and send text messages on their cell phones, but if they wanted to access the Internet, they had to use a laptop or a desktop computer.
During the online fast, the daily use of the phone was reduced by almost half, although the participants called and texted just like before. When perceived well-being, mental health and attentiveness were measured, more than 90 percent of the results improved in at least one of the areas.
Of course, the researchers remind us that the participants in their experiment are clearly different from those who take part in clinical psychology studies. Subjects were motivated to reduce smartphone use and also believed they could do it.
Olo according to the researchers’ analysis, people improved and their minds became sharper because people freed up time to live in the real world, do hobbies and meet other people face to face. Life also seemed to be better under my own control.
