Yoga 7 2-in-1 Gen 10: 6 things we liked (and 3 we didn’t so much) about this versatile laptop for all occasions

For our part, we were able to enter this debate thanks to the fact that they recently lent us the new Yoga 7 2 in 1, the mid-range convertible laptop by the Chinese brand Lenovocurrently in its tenth generation refining the formula. The result is a device that left us with a generally positive impression for almost the entire month we had it in our hands, although not without drawbacks worth noting.

What we liked

Slim and elegant design

There’s no denying that the Yoga 7 2-in-1 has a striking design, made from durable metal that’s been molded into smooth curves and remarkable thinness. Additionally, going against the tide of gray or black laptops, the laptop they lent us is a greenish blue color that they call Tidal Teal, referring to the color of the sea.

The thinness also translates into the weight of the device, which only weighs 1.4 kilograms, which makes it easier to transport and also helps to ensure that it is not excessively heavy when you use it in its tablet mode, which brings us to the next point.

Transformable and versatile

Much of the appeal of the Yoga 7 2-in-1 is that it can be transformed into various configurations thanks to a hinge that folds 360º, going from regular laptop mode to tablet mode and, in between, store mode.

The latter was particularly useful in my time with the machine, by prominently presenting the laptop screen at a more comfortable angle for viewing, whether when I wanted to watch a movie or play video games. Which is great, because the Yoga 7 2-in-1 has…

A beautiful OLED screen

With mid-range laptops, it is common for them to use IPS screens instead of OLED to reduce prices, a trap in which the Yoga 7 2-in-1 Fortunately, it did not fall because it has a beautiful 14-inch WUXGA screen and a resolution of 1920×1200.

It is an enviable screen, with deep colors, 400 nits of brightness and compatible with Dolby Vision, enough to enjoy any multimedia activity that one’s heart desires. Although there is a concession with the screen, it is that it has a refresh rate of only 60Hz instead of the 120Hz and 144Hz that we see in other of its peers, but this is far from being a determining factor when recommending the equipment.

And the sound is not far behind either.

Especially since the Yoga 7 2-in-1 also has a fairly decent sound system, consisting of four 2W speakers compatible with Dolby Atmos, which manage to avoid the flat and somewhat tinny sound that thin mid-range laptops usually suffer from and without presenting notable distortions even at the highest volumes. Don’t expect near ‘home theater’ sound quality or even high-end speakers or headphones, but it’s more than enough for most occasions.

Good performance (in your field)

As superficial people, so far we have been concentrating on the appearance of the Yoga 7 2-in-1, but just as important is its interior, made up of a relatively AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 CPU, specialized in AI functions such as the use of Copilot+ and with a performance powerful enough for everyday functions such as browsing the web, writing emails and watching movies, as well as some image editing and even a little ‘gaming’ as well.

Although in the latter one should not have high expectations, since although the laptop can run without difficulties contemporary games such as “Hollow Knight: Silksong” and “Hades 2” that do not demand too much from the computer, it suffers enormously running even at the minimum graphics more demanding titles such as “Clair Obscure: Expedition 33” or “Borderlands 4”, the latter only achieving between 15 and 20 fps with the graphics reduced to the minimum, although achieving a more respectable 40 fps using resolution scaling technology such as FSR.

The Yoga Pen completes the package

Although the main way to interact with a tablet – even one that is only a part-time tablet – is through our fingers, I still consider this a barbaric method that commits the cardinal sin of leaving fingerprints on an innocent screen. That’s why I’m glad that at least the version of the Yoga 7 2-in-1 I was loaned came with its own digital pen, the appropriately named Yoga Pen, which demonstrates the brand’s sincere intention to maintain the ‘branding’™.

And it’s a competent digital pen, with a latency of just 15ms and enough sensitivity to allow the user to draw accurately or even take notes, with Lenovo offering its Smart Notes app for the latter, making this computer particularly convenient for students, office workers or those interested in unleashing their artistic impulses occasionally.

Our objections

We are not convinced by the tablet mode

As much as I praised the Yoga 7 2-in-1’s versatility, not all of its transformations are equally excellent, and I have a couple of qualms with tablet mode. The first is that although the laptop is light to transport, weighing only 1.4 kilograms, this is a considerable weight as far as tablets are concerned, almost tripling the weight of an iPad Pro for example, something that is felt in extended sessions of use, especially when you hold it with one hand.

And speaking of holding it, the fact that the back of the tablet mode is the keyboard is, at least as far as I’m concerned, a disconcerting experience, forcing you to accidentally press the – happily disabled – keys while trying to adjust the position of the device.

Relatively short battery

A mid-range laptop involves compromises in various aspects, including the device’s battery. Still, I consider that a computer intended for students and office workers like the Yoga 7 2-in-1 seems to be should have a charge that lasts at least 8 hours or a (non-exploitative) day of work. Unfortunately, the Yoga 7 2-in-1 falls a little short of this goal, and in repeated use tests we only managed to get a maximum of 7 hours out of it, including using energy-saving measures in the final percentages.

Overheating during demanding tasks

While the Yoga 7 2-in-1 performed satisfactorily on most occasions, we noticed a tendency to overheat during more demanding tasks and, for example, the GPU reached temperatures close to 80ºC while testing “Borderlands 4”. And while most computers are designed to withstand these temperatures during operation, holding the device when it is that hot is not recommended.

Is the Yoga 7 2-in-1 recommended?

Small considerations aside, the Yoga 7 2-in-1 is one of the best mid-range laptops we’ve tested in recent months with a versatility that not only lies in its transformable nature. It is a prospect that becomes sweeter if you take into account that with a price of around S/.4 thousand, it is also among the most affordable on the market.
