Grok, the AI assistant of the social network owned by American billionaire Elon Musk, is the subject of criticism after users were able to create sexual images of women and minors with its help.
These images, made by retouching photos or videos of real people, have sparked protests around the world.
The European Commission announced Monday that it is reviewing complaints about the tool “very seriously.”
“The United Kingdom will not tolerate the continued proliferation of disgusting and libelous content online,” Liz Kendall emphasized, adding that she “fully” supports the action of the British regulator Ofcom and “any coercive measures it deems necessary.”
Ofcom, the body that regulates television, radio, telecommunications and online services in the United Kingdom, announced on Monday that it had requested information from X about how it protects its users, and did not rule out launching a formal investigation.
Grok acknowledged on Friday the existence of “flaws” that allowed users to obtain, with the help of this AI assistant, images of a sexual nature of minors or women, and assured that he is correcting them “urgently.”
Under British legislation on online safety (Online Safety Act), platforms must fight against the appearance of this content and act quickly to remove it.
In case of non-compliance, they are exposed to fines of up to 18 million pounds (about 24 million dollars), or 10% of their global turnover, if this amount is greater than that first figure.
