In view of the mission ExoMars, scheduled to land on Mars in 2030the Italian industry was tasked with developing a complex virtual and augmented reality infrastructure. The instrument will allow scientists to Rover Operations Control Center (ROCC) of the European Space Agency (ESA) to conduct immersive simulationstesting critical maneuvers and procedures of the Rosalind Franklin rover long before its actual arrival on Martian soil.
Simulation and reduction of operational risks
The platform is designed to faithfully recreate the operating conditions of the Oxia Planum region, the area selected for the landing. Through the use of three-dimensional models of the Martian terrain, operators will be able to experience complex scenarios in a safe environment, drastically reducing the risks associated with real maneuvers in a hostile environment.
The software architecture, created by the ICT Exprivia group in collaboration with the Polish company Bones for the graphic part, integrates data management and the collection of high resolution images. The objective is to guarantee a realistic interaction between the robotic vehicle and the surrounding environment, allowing the effectiveness of the human-machine relationship to be measured during the most delicate phases of the mission.
Virtual Reality: a standard for space exploration
The adoption of these technologies does not represent an isolated case, but is part of one consolidated ESA strategy. Immersive simulations offer significant advantages over traditional field training, allowing you to analyze systems with a level of detail that is impossible to achieve under terrestrial physical conditions.
The modular nature of the developed software will allow future upgrades with the integration of new scientific instruments and mission data. Furthermore, the platform is ready to be adapted to other planetary explorations, including Moon-related programs, consolidating the versatility of digital tools in the aerospace sector.

The role of national industry
Italian participation in ExoMars underlines the technical ability of national companies to dialogue with large international organisations. “The participation of Exprivia as a technological partner of this robotic space mission is part of a consolidated collaboration between our company and ESA“, commented Roberto Medri, sales manager of Exprivia’s Aerospace&Defence unit. “Projects like this show not only Europe’s ability to face the great challenges of planetary exploration by leveraging specialized skills, but also the role of Italian industry in contributing in a concrete way to the most advanced international missions”.
