The ‘God of War’ series gets its own Kratos: The star of the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ series becomes the god of war

A familiar face in a new role

Although his name was not often mentioned in fan speculation, Hurst’s selection is actually very logical. Namely, he alreadyć has a firm place in the “God of War” universe. In the game’s latest sequel, 2022’s God of War Ragnarök, Hurst lent the voice and stature of the Norse god of thunder, Thor, who is one of Kratos’ main adversaries. For that performance, he was nominated for the prestigious BAFTA award, which testified to his ability to portray the complexity and strength of mythological characters. Now, in a way, he will switch sides and take on the role of a Spartan anti-hero, which gives the series an additional interesting dimension.

The series will follow a Norse saga

The production house confirmed that the action of the series will be based on the so-called “soft reboot” of the franchise, that is, on the events of the games “God of War” (2018) and “God of War Ragnarök”. The story follows Kratos who, after destroying the Greek pantheon, found peace in the lost Nordic lands. After the death of his second wife Faye, he and his son Atreus embark on a dangerous journey to fulfill her last wish – to have her ashes spread from the highest peak of the nine kingdoms.

This path will not only be a path of temptation and struggle with Nordic gods and ghosts, but and the deeply emotional journey of a father and son. Kratos, haunted by the ghosts of his violent past, tries to be a father and protector, while at the same time hiding his divine nature from his son. As Amazon stated in the official description, their dynamic will be the heart of the series.

The list of names behind the camera shows that this is an extremely ambitious project. Ronald D. Moore, the man responsible for cult series such as “Battlestar Galactica” and “For All Mankind”, was hired as showrunner, screenwriter and executive producer. The first two episodes will be directed by Frederick EO Toye, a veteran who worked on hits such as “Shōgun” and “Fallout”. Amazon has shown great confidence in the project by pre-authorizing the series for two seasons, and the premiere is expected in 2027.

While the most important role has been cast, fans are eagerly awaiting news on who will play Atreus, Freya, Mimir and the rest of the iconic characters from Norse mythology. Judging by the first selection, it seems that the series is in safe hands.
