Threads surpasses X in mobile users and consolidates its advantage over Elon Musk’s network

The platform owned by Meta has reached a total of 141.5 million daily active users in its application for iOS and Android smartphones, while X has 125 million daily active users in its application for devices with these operating systems.

This was announced by the analysis platform Similarweb in its latest report, which, collected by TechCrunch, shows the leadership of Threads in the ‘microblogging’ platform sector, with data collected until January 11 of this year, which demonstrates how its use continues to grow, dethroning the social network owned by Elon Musk.

Since its launch in July 2023, Threads has been adding more and more users globally and, according to data collected by Similarweb, it was approximately from October of last year when the Meta social network began to surpass X in daily active users for mobile devices.

This progressive evolution in user growth shows that its success on mobile devices is not necessarily associated with the recent incidents that X has experienced, due to its integrated artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Grok.

Specifically, Musk’s social network has faced controversy related to the creation of photographs of people wearing underwear or bikinis, including minors, created and shared by users on the platform itself, through Grok.

This type of activity has been criticized by users and, in addition to these complaints, several countries have taken measures to stop this bad practice of X’s AI, until it was the social network itself that ended up blocking the generation of sexualized images through Grok.

Therefore, it must be taken into account that the increase in active users in the Threads ‘app’ represents a long-term trend, which may be due to the various functions offered by the social network, as well as that its activity is linked to other Meta platforms such as Instagram.

So much so that, in August of last year, the head of Instagram himself, Adam Mosseri, shared that Threads had registered more than 400 million active people each month. “This started as a crazy idea to compete with Twitter, and has grown into a meaningful platform that encourages the open exchange of perspectives,” Mosseri said at the time. More recently, in October 2025, the company assured that Threads had 150 million daily users globally.
