BMW’s head of development Joachim Post said the 4 Series will ‘continue to play an important role’ and gave coupe and cabrio lovers some hope in the SUV era. But Motor1 immediately drops the ball: the current generation (G22/G23) will reportedly remain in production at least until 2029, so it is realistic that the new Series 4 will appear only towards the end of the decade.
The most interesting part of the story is the platform. If the new 4 Series retains the internal combustion engine, Motor1 expects an upgraded version of the existing CLAR architecture, while the electric i4 could switch to the Neue Klasse, BMW’s new 800 V EV platform. The Neue Klasse relies heavily on software and uses four large computers that BMW calls ‘superbrains’, responsible for infotainment, automated driving, dynamics and basic car functions.
As for power, Motor1 states that gasoline versions could continue the evolution of today’s engines: the 2.0 turbo four-cylinder has 255 hp, which is about 190 kW, and the 3.0 turbo inline six has 386 hp, about 288 kW. The M4 today is at 473 hp, about 353 kW. For the electric direction, they take the iX3 50 xDrive as a reference with 463 hp, about 345 kW and 473 lb-ft, which is about 641 Nm, while today’s i4 M60 goes up to 593 hp, about 442 kW.
According to them, the design would flow from the Neue Klasse family, with sharper lines and a different ‘face’ than today’s BMWs, and a new generation of interfaces should arrive inside, including the ‘panoramic’ display over the base of the windshield that BMW showed as a direction for future models. Motor1 emphasizes that the 4 Series is usually a ‘sportier’ visual version of the 3 Series, so in that philosophy it should still look more aggressive than the sedan.
The price is currently the same estimate. Motor1 reminded that today the 4 Series Gran Coupe in the USA starts at 52,550 dollars, the coupe at 54,650, the i4 at 59,250, and the M4 at 83,550 dollars, so they speculate that the new generation could start in the middle to higher range of 50 thousand dollars, very possible around 60 thousand. Until then, the logic is simple: if the 4 Series sticks around until 2029, there will be more facelifts and price hikes before a true successor arrives.
