Mark Zuckerberg: It’s hard to imagine the future without AI glasses

During the fourth quarter 2025 business results report, Mark Zuckerberg spent most of his time talking about his ambitions in the field of smart wearable devices. He compared the transition from regular glasses to AI glasses to the turning point from flip phones to smartphones more than a decade ago.

“Billions of people are wearing glasses or contact lenses to correct vision. I believe we are in a similar stage when smartphones appeared. At that time, smartphones replacing feature phones is only a matter of time. It’s hard to imagine that in a few years, most of the glasses people wear will not be AI glasses,” said boss Meta.

He said the company’s smart glass sales have tripled in the past year and affirmed that this is one of the fastest growing consumer electronics devices in history.

Zuckerberg’s statements are often skeptical, especially after the failure of his previous ambitious metaverse project. However, according to Tech Crunchreality is showing a strong wave of transformation. The world’s largest technology corporations are pouring money into the field of wearable devices. Google plans to launch new smart glasses this year after a $150 million partnership with eyewear brand Warby Parker. Apple also transferred personnel from the Vision Pro project to develop thin and light smart glasses, expected to be released in the next 1-2 years. Snap has just announced the separation of the Specs glass segment into a subsidiary for optimization. Samsung has confirmed that it will introduce AR glasses later this year. Meanwhile, OpenAI plans to launch an AI-integrated wearable device, although currently it prioritizes devices shaped like lapel pins or headphones.

Meta is still leading the market in terms of commercialization. The company has launched many diverse models, including a line of smart glasses in collaboration with Oakley, optimized for sports practice, the segment considered the most potential today.

Analysts say that although AI glasses may not reach the scale of completely replacing smartphones immediately, the upcoming simultaneous participation of Google, Apple and Meta shows that a new era of AI hardware is beginning.
