Switch becomes the best-selling console in Nintendo’s history

Nintendo has officially rewritten the internal hierarchy of its hardware successes, closing 2025 with a long-awaited milestone. The Nintendo Switch console has reached 155.37 million units sold globally, surpassing the 154.02 million of Nintendo DS and positioning itself as the most successful platform ever produced by the Kyoto company. Despite the presence of the successor model on the market, the original hardware continued to move significant volumes, placing 1.36 million units in the last quarter of the year and confirming an uncommon longevity in the current technological landscape.

On the new generation front, the Nintendo Switch 2 consolidated its position reaching a total of 17.37 million units sold. The last quarter of the calendar year was particularly brilliant, with 7.01 million consoles distributed, demonstrating a generational transition that is proceeding without slowdowns. The software dedicated to the new flagship has already exceeded the threshold of 37 million copies, with Mario Kart World immediately establishing itself as the leading title thanks to 14.03 million units sold, followed at a distance by the good performances of Donkey Kong Bananza and the Switch 2 version of Pokémon Legends: ZA.

However, the software catalog of the first Switch continues to represent a fundamental economic pillar for the company, with a cumulative total that has now exceeded the threshold of 1.5 billion games sold. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe maintains the absolute primacy of the historical ranking, reaching 71 million copies, flanked by the consolidated results of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Also noteworthy are the data relating to the most recent and cross-generational releases, such as the Switch version of Pokémon Legends: ZA which totaled 8.41 million units, demonstrating an installed base that remains extremely active in the consumption of digital and physical content.
