Scientific and cultural activities seek to promote vocations in girls

In the context of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is commemorated on February 11, various academic, cultural and scientific institutions have prepared an agenda of activities aimed at making visible the work of women scientists, promoting vocations in girls and reflecting on the challenges of gender equity in the production of knowledge.

Universum, the Science Museum of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, invites girls to train as astronauts, explore space and discover science through the activity Little People to Space and Beyond, which will take place within the framework of this anniversary.

The billboard, which will run from February 11 to 15 and emphasizes the contributions of scientists throughout history, also includes the projection of the video Mexican mathematicsthe Mother Turtle workshop and the round table “From exclusion to presence: women in science”, among other proposals.

For its part, the UNAM Institute of Physics will carry out the Women in Physics dissemination cycle on February 11, during its visits to the CCH Sur, Vallejo, Oriente, Naucalpan and Azcapotzalco campuses, where the talks will be given: Cooling neutrons to understand the universe; What is nanoscience?; Can the future be predicted? The answer from the physics of the complex.

The UNAM Mathematics Institute will hold the round table Ask a Mathematician, which will take place on February 11, at 1:00 p.m. in the Nápoles Gándara auditorium of the institute. María Emilia Caballero, Mariana Garduño and Carolina Melo, among other researchers, will participate.

Star Visionaries and The Martian Carp

The UNAM Institute of Nuclear Sciences will have three activities: Stellar visionaries, by women who founded modern astronomy; The Martian tent, with recreational activities about Mars exploration; and Meetings with scientists, which will be held at Utopia Meyehualco, in Iztapalapa, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Likewise, the National School of Forensic Sciences of the UNAM will hold the Third Fair of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, with more than 23 workshops and cultural activities, on February 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Palace of the School of Medicine. As part of the program there will be a talk by Alejandra Mercado, forensic doctor.

The Spain Cultural Center (CCEMx) joins the commemoration with a day that invites us to imagine more just, curious and diverse futures. Highlights include the Colors and Nebulas workshop, aimed at audiences ages three to five, and Marie’s Secret, for ages six and up. Both are taught by Paulina Cortez at 10 and 11 am.

The CCEMx will offer the Memory and Plastics and Violet Rally workshop, at 10 a.m., in the Panorama and Media Library rooms. As well as the discussion Incredible adventures of women in science, at 12:30 p.m.
