Smart glasses raise panic due to secret recording, networks are full of creepy videos

The problem is that these devices look like ordinary glasses, so people in conversation often do not pay attention to whether they are being recorded or not. Some models have a light that signals recording, but it can be small and easy to miss, especially in daylight or in a crowd. Another risk is that part of the video is published without blurring faces, names, license plates or location, so private information can quickly spread and end up in harassment and doxing, i.e. revealing your personal information online.

An additional layer of the story is the AI. A recording from the glasses is not only a video, but also a potential input for tools that can recognize a face, connect a profile, extract a name, job or social networks, at least in theory. And that’s why it’s being said more and more that the ‘face camera’ changes the rules of the game because it removes that moment when you take out your phone and it becomes clear to everyone what you’re doing.

In our country, as in other parts of the world, the recording and publishing of someone else’s image and voice is a sensitive issue, especially if it is about content that can humiliate, upset or harm someone, and it is even more problematic if it was recorded secretly and with intent. In practice, even when recording in a public space is a ‘grey area’, posting with identifying details very quickly becomes a problem for both the platforms and the person posting.

If you want to protect yourself at least a little, unfortunately there is not much you can do, except that if you see someone wearing such glasses and the conversation goes in your direction, you openly ask if they are being recorded. If you notice a post in which you are recognizable, immediately report the content of the platform and request its removal, and if necessary, save the evidence before deletion. This topic will expand as such devices become cheaper and as more and more people experience them as a ‘normal’ gadget rather than a camera.
