Starbucks renews European infrastructure with Adyen technology

Starbucks Coffee Company has formalized the completion of the transition to Adyen’s technological-financial platform for the management of payments in 943 stores across the United Kingdom, Austria and Switzerland. The operation involved the installation of 2,375 latest generation terminals, consolidating a unified infrastructure aimed at optimizing operational efficiency.

Rollout efficiency and operational impact

The implementation process stood out for its speed of execution: the technology upgrade of 900 stores was completed in just seven weeks. During periods of maximum activity, the installation rate reached 125 points of sale per week, without requiring the temporary closure of the premises or the interruption of service to the public.

To date, the system has already managed transactions relating to over 20 million purchases. According to the feedback from store collaborators, the new digital ecosystem is quicker and more intuitive, reducing waiting times at the checkout and simplifying accounting closing procedures.

Offline resilience: Store and Forward technology

One of the most relevant technical aspects of the partnership concerns the service continuity in degraded connectivity scenarios. Thanks to the “Store and Forward” functionality, Adyen terminals are able to process and encrypt payments even in the event of Wi-Fi network failures or internet signal interruptions.

Transactions made offline are securely stored and transmitted for final processing as soon as the connection is restored. The data indicates that, from August 2025 to today, this technology has made it possible to recover over 45,000 transactions that would otherwise have been lost due to technical network problems.

Strategic vision and international partnership

The European collaboration is part of a global strategy, following the partnership already active between Adyen and Alsea (Starbucks licensee) in the Mexican market. The goal is to create a homogeneous shopping experience that regardless of geographical boundaries.

Alexa von Bismarck, President EMEA at Adyen, highlighted how the modernization of payment infrastructure has become a direct revenue protection factor: “Starbucks operates at an extraordinary scale, where every second of uptime counts. With a unified payment platform, Starbucks streamlined in-store operations and gained the resilience to serve customers without interruption“.

On the other side, John Elliot, VP Technology EMEA at Starbucks, reiterated the importance of technological reliability in supporting hospitality: “Our partnership with Adyen ensures that our payment technology is as robust as our service. This stability allows our teams to focus on guests and the coffee they love“.
