Network operators use AI to optimize connections and reduce congestion during Tet

Since the beginning of February, major network operators in Vietnam have announced solutions to ensure stable network operations during Tet holidays. This is often an occasion to witness the movement and change of locations using mobile networks of users nationwide, requiring network operators to take adjustment measures to avoid network congestion, especially in crowded areas such as festivals.

Viettel forecasts that about 7.2 million users will travel during the 9-day vacation, with the main needs being voice calls and high-speed data usage. The network estimates that 5G traffic during peak hours during Tet 2026 will increase 5 times compared to Tet 2025, while total data traffic on 4G and 5G networks could increase by 30% over the same period last year.

Lunar New Year takes place in the context that 5G has been widely deployed in Vietnam, of which Viettel has about 30,000 stations, covering more than 90% of the population. To meet increased demand, the network said it has deployed more than 11,000 technical solutions, opened the TET26 package providing 26 GB data and 260 minutes of in-network calls, and promoted AI applications in network forecasting and optimization.

“Currently, Viettel’s AI can predict event scale with 92% accuracy compared to humans, automatically optimize resources, contributing to increasing operational efficiency and significantly reducing the number of manual intervention solutions compared to previous years,” the group said.

Meanwhile, MobiFone said that the current network capacity “meets demand well” and “ensures the ability to prevent abnormal network congestion in key areas with high data traffic”.

This network operator also prepares technical plans and enhances quality to ensure a stable network during Tet, in which devices on the network are checked, ensuring high redundancy configuration, for both domestic and international transmission, and at the same time ready for increased customer demand compared to normal days.

VNPT also predicts that users will increasingly prioritize value-added services based on mobile broadband such as data, OTT applications, social networks… while traditional voice and SMS traffic continues to decrease.

To serve the needs of Tet and early year events, the group said it has built detailed response scenarios and synchronously deployed solutions to upgrade and expand network infrastructure nationwide.

“The inter-provincial transmission system has had its total capacity increased to nearly 52,000 Gbps, an increase of 14% compared to before,” said a VNPT representative. In addition, the network’s international Internet infrastructure is also enhanced with a total capacity of over 11 Tbps – a number that is confirmed to be able to “ensure users’ access needs even in case some undersea cable lines encounter problems”.

VNPT’s content control system currently has a processing capacity of over 1,600 Gbps, meeting the requirements for network protection in high traffic conditions. In addition, the network also added 300 mobile broadcasting stations and field stations in large event areas, where crowds gather on New Year’s Eve and peak Tet days, setting up backup signal sources from satellite and terrestrial TV to backup sites, ensuring broadcast safety for essential channels.
