Narendra Modi calls for open source AI to serve as global commons

In front of a hundred world leaders, including presidents, UN officials and computer developers, Modi also urged the implementation of a technological development model based on “open source”. In that sense, he questioned the opacity of countries and corporations that treat artificial intelligence (AI) as a confidential strategic asset.

“It is said that sunlight is the best disinfectant. That is, Transparency is the greatest security. Some countries and companies believe that AI is a strategic asset, so it must be developed confidentially. India’s thinking is different,” Modi said during his opening speech at the meeting.

And to present India’s vision on the subject to the world, he exhibited the principles of MANAV an acronym that in Hindi means human and that configures the precepts for the management of human-centered AI with principles in an ethical, sovereign and accessible way.

In that sense, he called on the international community to make AI become a “global common good.”

“When the codes are open and sharedour millions of young minds can make them better and safer,” added the prime minister and insisted on the global benefits that shared technology can bring.

In any case, he assured that India “will be more alert regarding child safety” and argued that, in the same way that school curriculum is selected, the AI ​​space must be “child-safe and family-led.”

In conclusion, Modi stressed the urgent need to create global standards in the face of risks of deepfakes, the videos in which a very famous figure appears with statements or attitudes that he never made. In this regard, he warned that this type of manufactured content “generates instability in open societies.”

Then Modi called for the creation of “authenticity labels” or watermarks in audiovisual material to provide guarantees of veracity between real filming and artificial production, as is done with the nutritional labeling of foods.
