The first Chinese millionaire in Europe: MG was the first to cross the golden mark

MG is the first Chinese car brand that has cumulatively sold more than one million vehicles in Europe and the United Kingdom, the company announced. With this, MG crossed a symbolic border that shows how serious Chinese manufacturers have become on the European market, not only through individual hit models but through stable sales year after year.

The announcements also state that MG achieved this result through its presence in 34 European markets and a network of about 1,300 sales partners, which is an important part of the story because without a service and sales network there is no mass sale. For 2025, it is mentioned that MG has sold more than 300,000 vehicles in Europe and the UK, which is the pace at which this ‘million’ seems like a big surprise.

.

MG is also interesting because of its combined identity, as the brand is of British origin, but has been under Chinese ownership since the mid-2000s, and today in practice is SAIC’s main export brand. In Europe, in recent years, growth has been particularly driven by the offer of more accessible electric cars, with models that have often positioned themselves as ‘good enough’ for significantly less money than established rivals.

This result comes at a broader moment in which the European market is becoming a key target for more Chinese brands, so an even stronger fight for price, equipment and availability is expected. For buyers, this may mean more choices in price ranges where previously there were fewer electric and hybrid options, but also more and more discussions about where cars are manufactured and what EU rules will be set regarding incentives and local content.
