Finally something smart from them: Americans solved the issue of nuclear waste?

In principle, nuclear waste is dangerous because some of its parts remain radioactive for a very long time. The idea of ​​this system is to target those “stubborn” parts with neutrons and thus turn them into other substances that have shorter radiation or are easier for further disposal. In the best case scenario, this would mean less need for storage that is planned for tens of thousands of years.

When such nuclear reactions start, heat is generated, and the heat can be converted into electricity, similar to a conventional power plant. So, the same process that “processes” part of the waste can also provide useful energy along the way, instead of the waste just standing somewhere frozen. This solves two birds with one stone, but also two problems that are among the most crucial for world economies and energy supply.

Of course, this is just an idea, this kind of technology is not yet ready for the market. It needs to be proven that the system is reliable, safe and cheap enough to make sense, because accelerators are complex and expensive, and the whole drive would have to work stably for years. If it succeeds, this could be one of the ways to “push” nuclear energy to the public more easily, because it solves one of the biggest objections, what with the waste.
