On Wednesday, the European Commission proposed the opening of negotiations with six Western Balkan countries on the abolition of roaming fees. Unexpectedly high bills for mobile phone usage services are something we no longer have within the EU, and today we propose that this be extended to the Western Balkans as well, said Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
Once agreements are concluded with each of the partners and fully aligned with EU roaming rules, people traveling between the EU and the Western Balkans will be able to make calls, send text messages and use mobile data without additional roaming charges.
Now the Council of the EU should give a mandate to the Commission for opening negotiations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia. When it receives the mandate, the Commission will negotiate bilateral agreements with each of these countries.
Roaming within the European Union was officially abolished on June 15, 2017, and since then users pay for calls, SMS messages and mobile data at the same prices as in their home country while traveling within the EU.
