A post on the popular Instagram profile @chatgptricks, which deals with news from the world of artificial intelligence, started a huge debate after a clip was shared in which Sam Altman, CEO of the OpenAI company, compares the energy cost of “training” a person with that needed to develop an AI model. His statement, which reduces human development to mere energy consumption, caused an avalanche of negative comments and opened up questions about ethics and the future of technology.
A controversial comparison
In a video posted by the profile @chatgptricks, known for following the latest trends in the world of artificial intelligence for its almost 1.5 million followers, Sam Altman makes an argument that has left many speechless. Faced with criticism about the enormous consumption of electricity needed to train advanced AI models, Altman offered a new perspective.
– It takes a lot of energy to train a person. It takes about 20 years of life and all the food you eat in that period before you become smart – said Altman.
His thesis is simple: intelligence, whether human or artificial, has always had its energy cost. The post’s description further sharpened the debate, asking the question: “If artificial intelligence produces more economic and scientific value per kilowatt-hour than humans, does that change your view of things?” This profile, which is otherwise recognized as a key source of information about the development of the GPT model and the vision of Sam Altman, this time conveyed a message that did not meet with approval.
The audience is not enthusiastic
The reactions of the followers were quick and mostly extremely critical. Many called Altman’s comparison dehumanizing and misguided, stressing that the value of human existence cannot be measured exclusively in terms of productivity and energy efficiency.
One of the most popular comments sarcastically shares the opinion of many: “Someone completely missed the point of ‘life'”. Another user analyzed the problem in more depth: “This argument only makes sense if you see people as working beings, which we are not. Creating families, building societies, cultures and relationships… this guy has no idea.”
Certain comments humorously warned about the dangerous implications of such thinking.
– He just compared raising a child to training a model, which means that in twenty years someone will present their parents with a bill for the computational costs of childhood – one user wrote. Another matter-of-factly concluded: “Never mind, AI is more energy efficient – let’s abolish all human life.”
This announcement clearly showed the growing gap between the technocratic view of the world, where everything is measured by efficiency, and the humanistic approach that values life in its fullness. Although @chatgptricks is a profile that celebrates technological progress, the reactions to this post show that even tech enthusiasts have a limit beyond which utilitarian logic should not cross.
