President Donald Trump directed all US federal agencies to stop using products from Anthropic, an AI startup famous for its Claude model, declaring “no need for them”.
“I am directing all federal agencies in the US government to immediately stop using Anthropic technologies. We do not need and do not want to use them, and will not cooperate with them again,” Mr. Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on February 27.
He said the Department of Defense and other government agencies will have six months to completely eliminate Anthropic products. “If they do not support this process, I will use the full power of the President, with civil and criminal consequences, to force Anthropic to comply,” he said.
The Pentagon also classified Anthropic as a “supply chain threat”, a designation usually reserved for businesses in America’s adversary countries. This means that US corporations and defense companies will be banned from using Anthropic’s AI in contracts with the Pentagon.
Anthropic spokesman has not commented on the information.
Theo Reutersthis company last year reached an agreement worth a maximum of 200 million USD to develop AI products for the US military. They are the first AI laboratory to deploy a model on a secret US network, and also the first company to develop a model built specifically according to the requirements of customers specializing in ensuring national security.
Anthropic’s Claude model is used by many US military and intelligence agencies. According to Axiosthe US military deployed Claude in a raid campaign and arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife last month.
The above move was made after the deadline set by the US Department of Defense to resolve the controversy with Anthropic, revolving around the role of AI in national security. Anthropic said it only wanted limited assurances from the Pentagon that Claude would not be used for mass surveillance of Americans or in a fully autonomous weapons system.
However, months of closed negotiations suddenly erupted into public debate. On February 26, the company rejected the US Department of Defense’s new proposal and said the contract terms “are presented as a compromise but include legal language that allows those protections to be arbitrarily ignored”. The Pentagon imposed a deadline of 5:01 p.m. on February 27, requiring Anthropic to approve, otherwise it would face countermeasures from the Trump administration.
“These threats do not change our position: we cannot, in our conscience, accept it,” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on the company’s website. Mr. Trump’s decision came after some officials at the Pentagon took to social networks to criticize Anthropic.
