Daniel Vávra, the creative genius behind global hits such as Mafia and the medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance, is retiring from the world of video game development. However, it is not about a pension, butć about a new, ambitious chapter – Vávra will fully dedicate himself to the film adaptation of his blockbuster, taking on a key role in bringing the harsh story of medieval Czech to the big screen.
This news comes after the incredible success of the franchise, which has sold more than 15 million copies and has confirmed that stories without magic and dragons, but with deep historical realism, can win over a world audience. Vávra, previously Creative Director of Warhorse Studios, now takes on a new role to ensure that the film version stays true to the spirit of the game.
From the position of creative director to the director’s chair
The decision on Vávra’s full involvement in the film is a strategic move by the Czech studio Warhorse, which wants to retain creative control over its most valuable intellectual property. The director of the studio, Martin Frývaldský, confirmed that it is not a separation, butć about a logical step for Vávra, who after three globally successful games wanted to try something new.
- Dan has a new role, which is the creation of Kingdom Come. Moreć we’ve been expanding the brand beyond video games for a while. So far we have been to comics, concerts and tourism, but the film attracted us the most. That’s why Dan and I are working to bring it to the small or big screen. Moreć there is also a working version of the script – said Frývaldský to Czech media.
Frývaldský emphasized that Vávra will no longer be seen in the office every day, but he remains a key part of Warhorse in a broader sense. His new position is described as “transmedia director”, with the goal of overseeing the franchise’s expansion into other media. The studio is in active negotiations with the film industry, and as they say, they don’t just want to sell the rights.
- We feel interest from the film world, negotiations are more advanced. in progress. We don’t just want to sell the license, we want the film to be the way we imagine it – he added.
A project that has been brewing for a long time
The idea of a screen adaptation is not new. The project was first announced back in 2020 as a collaboration between Warhorse Studios and the Wild Sheep Content production house, led by former Netflix director of international originals, Erik Barmack. He then recognized the global potential of the story, comparing it to the phenomenon of The Witcher.
- It’s particularly interesting that narrative-heavy video games, like The Witcher and Kingdom Come: Deliverance, are uniquely adaptive and both local and global at the same time, Barmack told Variety.
Although the development of the project was temporarily slowed down due to the pandemic, it regained momentum after the huge success of the second sequel to the game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, which sold more than five million copies in the first year since its release in February 2025. Although it was initially considered whether the adaptation would be a film or a series, the latest information says that the focus is on a feature-length film, with the series remaining as an option for the future.
Fidelity to history and the story of a “not-so-heroic hero”
What made Kingdom Come: Deliverance stand out from the crowd of RPGs was its uncompromising realism and historical accuracy. The game does not assume the role of the chosen savior of the world, but Henry, the blacksmith’s son, whose village is burned and his family killed. His journey of revenge is about survival in a cruel world without arolios and dragons, which at the beginning rejected big publications.
- Everyone wanted some magic in games, and we offered a game where you start as the son of a blacksmith, you can become some kind of hero, but you never become a king – Frývaldský recalled.
It was this down-to-earthness that won the game. PR manager of the studio, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, added:
- The biggest feedback we’ve gotten from the community and reviewers is that this is a very believable and relatable story with a not-so-heroic hero.
According to announcements, the film will retain that same spirit. With Vávra at the head of the creative team, the goal is to create an authentic medieval experience that will attract a global audience, primarily in the US, Western European and Asian markets. The plan is to bring the film to the screens in the next few years, with a tentative goal of 2027 or 2028.
