Almost a decade ago, Molly Russell took her own life when she was fourteen after having viewed online content who were advocating suicide. and now his father, who has become an activist for the protection of minors in the digital sphere, hopes to raise awareness after the premiere on Sunday of a documentary about this tragedy.

The arrival on British screens of “Molly vs. The Machines,” by Marc Silver, “will bring back some of the pain,” laments Ian Russell, 62, in an interview with AFP in London.

But the father hopes the film will show that the case of Molly, who committed suicide on November 21, 2017, is not isolated and will “evolve” the debate about the impact of social media on children.

Although Russell denounces the responsibility of platforms “designed for profit” in the loss of his daughter, he does not advocate a restriction of networks for teenagers, a measure contemplated by several countries, after the ban recently approved in Australia.

Russell believes it is more effective to combat the impunity of technology giants who, according to him, deliberately target vulnerable people with addictive algorithms and flood them with harmful content for profit.

“Incomprehensible”

In 2022, a judicial investigation concluded that Molly had died “from an act of self-harm, while suffering from depression and the negative effects of content viewed on the internet.”

Of the 16,300 posts that Molly had consulted on Instagram during the six months before her death, around 2,100 were about depression, self-harm or suicide, the investigation established.

His interactions with content that promoted suicide multiplied until “he became convinced that he was worthless,” says his father.

“How could Molly convince herself of that? For those of us who were lucky enough to know her, it is incomprehensible,” he says.

According to the results of a survey published in October by the Molly Rose Foundation – a suicide prevention association co-founded by Russell – 37% of teenagers had viewed at least one form of high-risk content related to suicide, self-harm, depression or eating disorders during the week of the survey.

According to this survey, carried out before the child protection provisions of the British online safety law come into force in July 2025, more than a quarter (27%) of teenagers surveyed reported having consulted such content at least 10 times during that week.

“Rethink” algorithms

The Molly Rose Foundation has applauded some legislative measures proposed by the British government, calling the recent ban on AI virtual assistants from producing illegal or harmful content a “welcome first step.”

This ban was adopted following controversy over the proliferation of sexually manipulated AI images created by Grok, X’s automated conversation system.

In January, British media regulator Ofcom opened an investigation into X and xAI – which Grok developed – to determine whether they complied with data protection legislation regarding manipulated sexual images.

But the foundation urges this regulatory body to go further, demanding greater transparency from the platforms and establishing different age limits, depending on the potential danger of the tools they offer.

The foundation would like the algorithms used by the platforms to be “rethought” to promote “healthy” content rather than “harmful and toxic.”

For Russell, these measures would be more effective than the Australian ban, which only covers 10 platforms and could push minors towards more dangerous marginal sites.

But Molly’s father sees reasons for hope, such as the trial that began in February in California against Meta (Instagram, Facebook) and YouTube (owned by Google), accused of having deliberately made their platforms for young people addictive.
