BMW screwed up: They accidentally revealed all the models for 2027.

The absolute star of this unexpected discovery is undoubtedly the BMW M2 xDrive. For years there have been rumors about the smallest full-blooded M model getting all-wheel drive, and now it’s practically certain. Until now, the M2 was the last bastion of purists, the only M car offered exclusively with rear-wheel drive. That changes from 2027. The xDrive version is expected to be paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission, following the example of the larger M3 and M4 models.

But fans of the traditional train experience can breathe a sigh of relief. The standard M2 with rear-wheel drive and manual transmission remains on offer. Of course, the xDrive system also brings some compromises. The price is expected to be about five thousand dollars higher, which would raise the starting price in the US to approximately $75,000. There is also the inevitable increase in mass; for comparison, the M240i with xDrive weighs about 55 kilograms more than the rear-wheel drive version.

Electricity offensive and new naming rules

The list of models clearly shows that BMW with the new “Neue Klasse” platform is launching a full offensive on the electric vehicle market. The biggest surprise is the return of the i3 designation, but not in the form of a small city minivan, rather as a fully electric 3-series sedan. Two versions were listed, the i3 40 xDrive and the i3 50 xDrive. Along with them, the new generation of the 3 series with internal combustion engines is coming, and the most powerful model below the M3 will bear the designation M350 xDrive, thus replacing the previous M340i. This also confirmed the change in nomenclature, where BMW leaves the letter “i” at the end of the designations for its gasoline models to avoid confusion with the electric “i” sub-brand.

Electrification is rapidly expanding to the SUV segment as well. The new iX3, which arrives in North America this summer, will be available in three variants in 2027. The X4 model is also returning, but exclusively as a fully electric iX4, the coupe version of the iX3 model. The list is rounded off by the new generation of the X5 model, which, in addition to classic engines (like the basic X5 40 sDrive with rear-wheel drive), will also offer a powerful electric version, the iX5 60 xDrive.

Who is retiring?

As well as revealing new arrivals, the leaked list also confirms some departures. The list for 2027 is notable for the absence of the Z4 model and the entire 8 series. This supports the long-standing speculation that these models are being phased out and that they will probably not receive direct successors. The redesigned BMW 7 Series was also on the list, but its image was blurred, giving a hint that its official presentation is close. Although the V12 engine will not return, it is expected that the powerful V8 will survive in the new M Performance version of the M760. This unintentional announcement gave us an incredibly detailed insight into the future of BMW, which, by all accounts, is more dynamic and electrified than ever before.
