The legendary Assassin’s Creed title will get a new edition

After months and even years of rumors, leaks and cryptic announcements, Ubisoft has finally broken its silence and officially confirmed what has been rumored for a long time – the remake of the cult pirate adventure Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is truly in development. The game has a new subtitle and will be called Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

The confirmation came in a somewhat unusual, but thematically appropriate way. As part of an extensive announcement on the official blog entitled “Assassin’s Creed: In 2026”, outlining the future of the franchise, the French publisher published the first official conceptual drawing; games. It shows the protagonist Edward Kenway standing on the mast of his ship Jackdaw, and the new logo and title are prominently displayed in the corner. However, instead of a direct announcement, Ubisoft decided to play with the fans.

What the wind whispers is now official

The accompanying text next to the image does not name the game directly, butć refers to long-standing speculations.

“Assassin’s Creed speculation is nothing new, but it bears repeating: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted’, (which is the motto of all Assassins and their order). Well, except in this case, when some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your binoculars on the horizon.”

This confirmation, although shrouded in pirate argon, puts an end to one of the worst kept secrets in the video game industry. Rumors were so widespread that even the actor who lent the voice of Edward Kenway, Matt Ryan, hinted at the existence of the project on several occasions, and Ubisoft reportedly threatened to sue for leaking information. The whole situation culminated when the game appeared on the sites of age classification agencies, which is almost always a sure sign of an imminent announcement.

Jean Guesdon, recently appointed head of content for Assassin’s Creed, is now at the helm of the entire franchise, including overseeing this project. Interestingly, it was Guesdon who was the creative director on the original Black Flag from 2013, which gives fans hope that the spirit of the original will be preserved. According to unofficial information, the studio Ubisoft Singapore, known for the naval game Skull and Bones, is working on the project, with the support of veterans who participated in the creation of the original.

Long sailing to exit

Although the game is now official, we will still have to wait for its launch. According to earlier reports, Black Flag Resynced was supposed to be released in early 2026. However, in January, Ubisoft postponed one of its big titles, and now it is clear that it was precisely this game. The new approximate release period is placed in Ubisoft’s next fiscal year, which means that we could play the game in April 2026 at the earliest, and by March 31, 2027 at the latest. The platforms are not confirmed, but the release is expected for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Resynced is expected to be much more than a simple visual beautification. The original Black Flag was a cross-generational title, released for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which means there is huge room for technical improvement. It is speculated about a completely redesigned combat system, modernized parkour and significant graphic improvements that will use the power of the modern Anvil engine. There are also rumors that the story will be expanded and that the segments set in the modern era will be reduced or completely removed in order to keep the focus on the pirate fantasy.

The future of the franchise on the horizon

In addition to confirming the remake, Ubisoft also gave insight into other projects. Codename Hexe is described as a “unique, darker and narrative-driven experience”, while multiplayer title Codename Invictus, which is being worked on by the team behind For Honor, is said to be “a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise”. In addition, the mobile game Assassin’s Creed Jade was also mentioned. As a nice gesture for fans of older titles, Ubisoft also released a free update for Assassin’s Creed Unity that enables gameplay at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
