The jubilee, tenth edition of the Artificial Intelligence Battleground (AIBG) student competition will be held on August 21 and 22 in BIRD Incubator in Zagreb. Riječ is about a hackathon organized by BEST Zagreb, a local group of the international student organization BEST (Board of European Students of Technology). AIBG was held for the first time in 2015 as a continuation of the BEST Code Challenge project, with the aim of offering students a unique competition focused on the practical application of artificial intelligence. To date, more than 350 students have participated in it, and over time the competition has grown beyond the local framework and become one of the more recognizable student AI events.
The competition consists of a programming and a competition part. In the first part, the teams, which can have a maximum of four members, have 20 hours to analyze the task and develop their own AI solution. The task is based on a special game that is designed and programmed by BEST Zagreb members every year.
In the second part, there are duels in which the developed AI models compete with each other, and the victory is won by the strategy that proves to be the most successful.
Participants can apply individually or in a team, and all students with an interest and basic experience working with artificial intelligence are welcome. Participation in the competition is free, and the organizers, with the support of partners, provided new prizes for the three best teams:
800 euros for first place
450 euros for second place
250 euros for third place.
The organizers point out that AIBG is a hackathon that gives students the opportunity for practical work, teamwork and connection with industry.
“AIBG is perhaps the biggest challenge for students in Croatia – an opportunity for competitors to test their AI bots, but also for organizers who have been preparing the hackathon task for months,” said organizer Anja Macan.
A similar experience is shared by the participants. Contestant Niko Perica emphasizes that the atmosphere at the event is special. “The task is very fun, and it is organized by the students, so the goal is for everyone to have fun, regardless of whether you do well with the task or not,” he said.
According to the words of the organizer Domagoj Jurišak, one of the special features of the competition is the fact that a completely new game is developed every year, which gives the contestants the opportunity to show their creativity and technical knowledge.
AIBG is organized by BEST Zagreb, a student association founded in 1998 that operates as part of the European BEST network. The organization is present in 29 European countries through 81 local groups, and provides students with opportunities for additional education, international cooperation and connections with future employers.
This year’s edition of AIBG is supported by partners Ericsson Nikola Tesla, Janaf, Cloudbis and Blue Team.
Applications for participation are open via official page of the competition.
