Google, Meta and Microsoft sign a new agreement to jointly combat online scams

The main technology companies, including Google, Meta y Microsofthave signed the call ‘Online Services Agreement against Scams’ to combat threats and misleading content on its platforms and applications.

The agreement aims to “establish the guidelines on how companies will work together to tackle online scammers”, as well as “promote a joint response of the sector together with governments, law enforcement agencies, NGOs and other entities,” according to the agreement, shared by Google on its blog.

Concretely, Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Meta, Amazon, OpenAI, Adobe, Match Group, Pinterest, Levi Strauss & Co y Target They have committed to sharing information about the fraudulent activities carried out in the services they offer and also about how to detect and prevent them.

“As an industry, we will unify our collective capabilities, share threat intelligence, and coordinate defenses to combat global fraudsters,” Google said.

Among the rest of the measures contemplated in the agreement are implementing new prevention toolsincluding artificial intelligence (AI) systems, to detect fraud more quickly and effectively; a more rigorous verification of economic transactions within the platforms; and provide complaint channels for the victims.

However, the signatory companies have clarified that the agreement is a “set of principles and measures of voluntary nature“, so those companies that fail to comply will not be sanctioned.

The signature comes within the framework of the United Nations Global Anti-Fraud Summit, which is being held on March 16 and 17 in Vienna (Austria) to address the challenges posed by this type of threats.

This new agreement is also a consequence of the continuous advances of technology companies in cybersecurity. For example, Meta denounced a series of Fraudulent advertisers in Brazil and China last February, and is testing new alerts on Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger against suspicious friend requests and chats with fraudulent content.
