Samsung is withdrawing its Galaxy Trifold after three months

Samsung has officially confirmed the end for its ambitious project, the Galaxy Z TriFold. A device that was supposed to demonstrate the future of foldable phones has been pulled from the market just three months after its global launch, leaving behind questions about the company’s strategy and the sustainability of radical innovations in the smartphone industry.

Confirmation from Samsung: First Korea, then the rest of the world

A company spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg that sales will first be suspended in the domestic, South Korean market, after which the same will happen in the United States as the remaining stocks are exhausted. On the American website of Samsung, the device is more marked as “sold out”, and only rare copies can be found in Samsung’s physical stores. From the very beginning, TriFold was available exclusively through official channels, without the support of telecom operators or retail chains, which further emphasized its exclusive character.

An overpriced tech showcase

The decision to shut down was not made due to lack of interest, butć because of the harsh economic calculation. Priced at $2,899, the Galaxy Z TriFold was never meant to be a mass-market product. From the beginning, Samsung positioned it as a “technological showcase” and a demonstration of engineering power, not as a device intended to make a profit. The extremely high production costs, due to the complex design with two hinges and three screens, have further increased due to the rising prices of key components such as memory chips. This made the continuation of production financially unprofitable, even with high demand. According to estimates, only twenty to thirty thousand units were produced for the whole world.

The successor is in question, but the technology remains

Although it has been confirmed that there are no plans for a successor in the near future, the experiment with TriFold was not in vain. Won-Joon Choi, one of the heads of Samsung’s mobile department, said that due to the complexity of production, the company has not yet committed to making the second generation. However, he hinted that elements developed for the TriFold, such as a larger screen and a wider aspect ratio ideal for viewing media content, could appear in future, more commercially available foldable devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold series. Thus, the legacy of this short-lived but innovative device will continue through the evolution of Samsung’s standard offer.
