The secret lies in optimal load distribution and structural flexibility. In flight, the wings are the ones that produce the lifting force that pushes upwards. On the B-52, the wings were designed to be incredibly flexible; While taking off with a full load, the wingtips can be seen bending upwards by almost two meters. This flexibility acts as shock absorbers, preventing the crazy load from creating cracks at the connection points.

In addition, most of the plane’s weight during takeoff is fuel (about 75 tons). The engineers placed the fuel and armament tanks inside the wings and not just inside the body, so that the weight (the downward force) is exactly where the lift (the upward force) is created. This is an engineering “balance of forces” that allows the chassis to carry weights that would theoretically crush it.

The F-35 is designed for target marking, radar hunting and air combat. The B-52 is designed for one mission: wiping out strategic terrain and infrastructure after the air threat has been removed.
