Switch 2 update introduces boost mode for older titles

The latest system update released by Nintendo for its new flagship, version 22.0.0, introduces a feature intended to optimize the experience of using the pre-existing software library. Called Portable Mode Enhancement, the option allows titles originally developed for the first generation of Switch to operate with the technical parameters typical of TV mode even when the console is used on the move. Taking advantage of the 1080p display of the new hardware, compared to the 720p of the original model, the activation of this mode promises a qualitative increase in visual content, aligning the portable performance with that which was previously only possible to obtain via connection to the fixed base.

However, the implementation of this function involves some technical and structural compromises that the user must consider before manually activating it within the software management menu. Since the system forces the execution of titles in TV mode, there is a significant increase in battery energy consumption and the automatic deactivation of touch screen functions. Additionally, Joy-Con 2 controllers attached to the sides of the camera body are recognized by the software as if they were a Pro Controller, potentially altering some input dynamics or the correctness of on-screen instructions provided by older games.

It is important to underline that the effectiveness of Handheld Mode Boost remains limited exclusively to backwards compatibility. Nintendo has clarified that the option has no effect on the native software for Switch 2, which is already optimized to fully exploit the capabilities of the new hardware in every configuration. The variability of the graphic benefits will therefore depend on the individual applications, without prejudice to the fact that updating to the latest firmware version represents the fundamental requirement to access this performance enhancement on the move, a feature that remains a technical exclusive of the new ecosystem.
