They disrupt the four largest botnets in the world, with the capacity to launch DDoS attacks of up to 30Tbps

An international operation has interrupted the infrastructure they used four botnets dedicated to launching denial of service (DDoS) attacks, some with a range of 30 terabits per second.

The operation, in which the authorities of the United States, Germany and Canada have participated, was directed against those responsible for the ‘botnets’ Aisuru, KimWolf, JackSkid and Mossad that, together, reached infect more than three million devices of the Internet of Things (IoT) around the world, including ‘routers’ and ‘webcams’.

These networks, considered the largest in the world, were used to launch “hundreds of thousands” of DDoS attackssome as part of extortion strategies, which caused “losses and repair expenses of tens of thousands of dollars” to their victims, as reported in a press release from the United States Department of Justice.

As detailed, the Aisuru botnet was responsible for more than 200,000 DDoS attack commands, while KimWolf issued more than 25,000, JackSkid launched more than 90,000 and Mossad, more than 1,000. In addition, the KimWolf and JackSkid botnets were specialized in infecting devices that are traditionally protected by firewalls and isolated from the rest of the internet.

The note also highlights some of these attacks that reached approximately 30 terabits per second, what are considered to be “unprecedented figures.”

The police operation has interrupted the command and control infrastructure of the four ‘botnets’ to prevent them from infecting new devices and limit or eliminate their ability to launch attacks.

It has been achieved with the collaboration of technology companies such as Akamai, Amazon Web Services, Cloudflare, Google, Nokia, Okta, Oracle, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the Netherlands police, as well as the EUROPOL PowerOFF team.
