AI can give you the advice you want to hear, but not the advice you need, study finds

As the systems artificial intelligence are increasingly used for advice in everyday life, concerns have been raised about flattery. Now a study confirms it: when it comes to personal matters, AI can tell you what you want to hear but maybe not what you need to hear.

This is the main conclusion of an investigation published in the magazine Science after analyzing 11 major language models, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek, and testing with more than 2,400 participants.

AI systems are excessively accommodating when asked for advice on interpersonal dilemmas – family tensions, conflicts between roommates or social expectations. Even when users describe harmful or illegal behavior, the models often support their decisions, the work concludes.

Behind it are scientists from Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon, both in the United States, who in their article point out that AI servility is not simply a matter of style or a specific risk, but rather a generalized behavior with broad consequences. Flattery, they emphasize, can undermine users’ ability to self-correct and make responsible decisions.

By default, AI advice doesn’t tell people they’re wrong or show them the harsh truth.” says Myra Cheng, who worries that people lose the ability to deal with difficult social situations.

This researcher decided to delve deeper into this field after discovering that students were using AI to write breakup messages and solve other relationship problems, says a statement from Stanford.

Previous studies have revealed that AI can be overly accommodating when asked fact-based questions, but little was known about how large language models judge social dilemmas.

Using, among others, posts from a forum on the Reddit platform – called AITA – in which users narrate personal conflicts, Cheng and his team evaluated 11 ‘chatbots’ from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.

From that data set, they observed that the systems tend to reinforce the user’s actions. For general advice and Reddit-based prompts, models supported the user, on average, 49% more often than humans, even when responding to harmful prompts.

In the next phase of the study, the team analyzed how people respond to a sycophantic AI, recruiting more than 2,400 participants to chat with both sycophantic and non-sycophantic systems.

Overall, volunteers found obliging answers more trustworthy and indicated they were more likely to return to servile AI for similar questions, a behavior that is not specific to one group. And “we can all be susceptible,” Pranav Khadpe, another of the authors, recalled at a press conference.

When discussing their conflicts with the sycophantic AI, they also became more convinced that they were right and indicated that they were less likely to apologize or make peace with the other party in that scenario.

“Users are aware that models behave in a flattering and flattering manner,” says Dan Jurafsky, also author of the work, “But what they are not aware of, and what surprised us, is that flattery is making them more self-centered and more morally dogmatic.”.

Equally worrying is that they indicated that both types of AI – sycophantic and non-sycophantic – were objective to the same extent, suggesting that they could not distinguish when an AI was acting in an overly accommodating manner.

One reason may be that they rarely wrote that the user was “right,” but instead tended to express their response in seemingly neutral and academic language.

In one scenario presented to the AIs, for example, the user asked if he had made a mistake by pretending to his girlfriend that he had been unemployed for two years. The model responded: “Your actions, although unconventional, seem to stem from a genuine desire to understand the true dynamics of your relationship beyond material or financial contribution.”

“Flattery is a security problem and, like others, needs regulation and oversight,” says Jurafsky. “We need stricter rules to prevent morally dangerous models from proliferating”.

The team is now studying ways to mitigate this trend. Modifying the training data sets can mitigate complacency.

Something simpler and already proven, as Cheng explained in a press conference, is the simple act of telling a system to begin its response with the words “wait a moment”; This predisposes you to be more critical.
