A critical security breach is suspected in Telegram

The global cyber community has been on alert in recent days following a report of a critical security breach in the encrypted messaging app Telegram, while the company itself denies its existence.

According to the details of the analysis, the technical vector of the breach indicates a large-scale risk to more than a billion users of the platform, since the attack is carried out remotely via the Internet, it does not require complex conditions or advanced circumvention, does not require permissions or an account on the part of the attacker, does not require any action on the part of the user and even allows full control of the attacker, including stealing information, changing files and disabling services.

In the cyber world, it is noted that loopholes in messaging applications are a particularly sought-after target for state agencies and espionage groups, especially when it comes to vulnerabilities of such a high level of severity. It is believed that this is a fundamental flaw in the way the application handles incoming input, for example media files or automatic requests.

The gap between the researchers’ findings and the company’s response places the issue at the heart of a global conflict, with the cyber community closely monitoring the developments and the possibility of publishing a fix or official confirmation of the vulnerability.
