NASA goes around the moon after even 50 years. Here are all the details

The launch countdown includes the “L minus” and “T minus” marks. “L minus” means how much time is left until takeoff, expressed in hours and minutes. “T minus” time represents a series of events embedded in the countdown.

Pauses in the countdown, or “holds”, are planned to be built in so that the launch team can target a precise time window for the launch and provide additional time for certain tasks and procedures without affecting the overall schedule.

During planned holds in the countdown process, the countdown clock is intentionally stopped, and the T-minus time is also stopped. However, L-minus time continues to flow.

The Artemis II mission, which will last about 10 days, will take its astronauts further into space than anyone has ever been before.

Its goal is to lay the foundations for the future landing of humans on the surface of the Moon, for the first time since the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s.

When will Artemis II be launched?

The next possible dates listed by NASA are April 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 30 April 2026. In December 2024, the space agency set a deadline for the Artemis II launch by the end of that month.

A potential launch in February was scrapped after testing, known as a ‘wet dress rehearsal’, was interrupted due to a leak of hydrogen rocket fuel at the junction connecting the launch tower to the rocket.

A March launch was also canceled after a helium leak was discovered. In addition to solving technical problems, mission planners must also wait for the Moon to pass through the appropriate part of its orbit, so launch time windows are determined accordingly.

In practice, this creates a pattern of about one week at the beginning of each month when the rocket can be pointed in the right direction, followed by about three weeks of no launch. The mission includes the first manned flight of NASA’s huge Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion space capsule.

After safely entering orbit, the astronauts will test the behavior of the Orion capsule. This will include manual control of the capsule in Earth orbit to practice steering and alignment of the spacecraft for future lunar landings.

They will then head to a point thousands of kilometers outside the Moon to test Orion’s life support, propulsion, power and navigation systems.
