Instagram will continue to use the PEG-13 rating on Teen Accounts, but with limitations

Meta and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) have reached an agreement on how the technology company will use the PG-13 cinema system to classify the contents of adolescent accounts, as their use differs from that made in cinema.

Since October last year, Instagram has used the PG-13 system to classify content aimed at users under 18 years of agein such a way that they see it as appropriate for their age, like what happens in the cinema.

One of the reasons that led Meta to implement it was the international recognition it has. However, its application on Instagram and in the cinema differs, since, for example, although partial nudity or sexually suggestive content can be seen in a PG-13 film, these are prohibited on the social network.

Now, Meta and the MPA have reached an agreement on the use of the PG-13 system, for which the technology firm has accepted some limitations, such as reduce references to this content rating in Teen Accounts and introduce a disclaimeras detailed in a joint press release.

This clause, specifically, will say: “There are many differences between social media and movies. We do not work with the MPA when updating our content settings, and they do not rate any content on Instagram, nor do they endorse or approve our content settings in any way. Instead, we rely on the MPA’s public guidelines, which are already known to parents. Our content moderation systems are not the same as a movie ratings boardso the experience may not be exactly the same.”

“While we welcome efforts to protect children from content that may not be appropriate for them, this agreement helps ensure that parents do not confuse both systems, which operate in very different contexts“said MPA President and CEO Charles Rivkin.

The terms of this agreement will take effect next April 15.
