Intel’s new generation of artificial intelligence processors, the Core Ultra Series 3, mark the most important transition in the last decade, to the age of built-in AI. I reviewed the MSI Prestige 14 AI Core Ultra laptop, which is based on the Intel Core Ultra X7 358H processor, and found a gaming monster in the body of a ballerina.
The Intel Core Ultra X7 358H is no longer a fast processor, but a processing unit that includes a dedicated NPU (neural processing unit) that changes the rules of the game. For a compact computer like the MSIPrestige 14 AI, the meaning is enormous: the ability to run heavy tasks, AAA games, impressive graphics processing and smart energy management – all within a thin and light chassis.
Although it is not a traditional “Hardcore” gaming machine with a separate and dedicated video card, the integration of Intel Arc architecture built into a 14-inch body allows gamers on the go to enjoy a smooth gaming experience in popular titles, without sacrificing portability or battery life.
As mentioned, at the heart of the machine beats the Intel Core Ultra X7 358H. With an array of 16 cores (4 performance cores, 8 efficient cores and 4 ultra-efficient cores for low power consumption), it reaches a speed of up to 4.9 GHz.
The processor knows how to maneuver between heavy tasks and energy saving in an unprecedented way. Next to it, you will find a 32 GB LPDDR5 working memory, which ensures that multitasking on the computer will be completely smooth, both when working with large files and when editing video.
In addition, the computer is equipped with a 14-inch OLED screen with a ratio of 16:10 (FHD+). The panel covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, making it an excellent tool for content creators who need color accuracy. The screen is a touch screen that supports the MSI Nano Pen (supplied in the kit), which turns the computer into a digital notebook or graphic tablet in an instant. At the same time, the refresh rate remains at 60Hz, a relatively modest figure for modern computers in this category.
As mentioned, the computer does not come with a separate graphics card, but good days have come, when the technology provides a significant leap forward. The built-in graphics card, Intel Arc B390, enables graphic work and light to moderate gaming at a very high level compared to a computer without a dedicated video card.
There are also no compromises in the connection sector with Thunderbolt 4 for data transfer and fast charging. Wi-Fi 7 that guarantees the highest wireless Internet speed today. In addition, there are standard HDMI and USB-A connections that save the need for adapters.
Weighing only 1.37 kg and a rigid aluminum chassis, this is one of the lightest computers in the 14-inch category. The battery (71Wh) is the highlight, with a promise of up to 30 hours of local video playback under optimal conditions – a figure that places it as a worthy competitor to Apple’s MacBook computers in the field of energy efficiency.
All in all, this is one of the computers that I enjoyed reviewing the most in recent years, I was able to play all my favorite games, even those that are difficult on my “normal” computer, and I especially enjoyed the ability to live on the battery for such a long period of time during the day. There is a compromise on a refresh rate of 60Hz and a brightness of about 300 nits, but overall it is a small price to pay for the performance that the computer, and especially the processor, does provide.
