End of GPS: the system that works without satellites and promises greater precision anywhere

The core of MagNav is in his quantum magnetometers of rubidium, which detect the magnetic field thanks to the phenomenon of atomic spin precession. To put it in perspective, These sensors can detect minute changes in the magnetic field: less than 80 femtoteslas per root hertz, an almost unimaginable sensitivity.

Each sensor weighs only 70 grams and is the size of a large matchbox (144 cm³). They can be installed in any type of vehicle: cars, airplanes, drones, even boats. During testing, sensors were placed both inside and outside a small plane, and the system performed with surprising accuracy, even in adverse conditions.

MagNav does not emit signals, making it invisible to enemy radars or systems. In military or sensitive environments, that is a huge strategic advantage.

To verify its effectiveness, the Q-CTRL team carried out flights of more than 6,700 kilometers with a Cessna light aircraft, at different altitudes. In the worst case, the positioning error was only 22 meters. According to the report, “the largest advantage achieved (∼46×) is obtained using externally mounted quantum magnetometers.” That means the system was 46 times more accurate than one of the best commercial inertial systems.

Land tests were also carried out, south of Orange (New South Wales), on paved and gravel roads. Despite using a vehicle without protection against vibrations or noise, MagNav achieved an accuracy 7 times greater than the best INS (inertial navigation system).
