Error 404: How a Broken Website Can Help Find Missing Boys

Instead of the classic “page not found”, the user sees the image of a minor, their name, the date and the place where they were last seen, as well as an access direct to line 142 and to the official file of the National Registry of Information on Missing Minors (RNIPME), of the Ministry of Justice. The logic is simple: turn a failed click into a dissemination opportunity.

The project is promoted by the NGO Ideas that Transform and was developed by lawyer Daniel Monastersky, specialist in data protection and digital awareness. As he explained, the concept began to take shape in 2010 and It had a first version in 2016but now it was rebuilt from the ground up to facilitate mass adoption.

“We are hacking invisibility. By bringing search alerts to sites where people browse every day, we take the topic out of its usual niche and turn it into a cause from which it is impossible to look away,” said the lawyer.

The new version of Not Found allows any company, organization, or user to set up a custom 404 page from a web panel, adapt colors and logo, download an HTML file and upload it to your server. According to its promoters, the process takes less than five minutes and does not require advanced technical knowledge.

In addition, the platform offers specific integrations for different environments: plugin for WordPress, snippet for Shopify and ready scripts for Wix, Squarespace, Tiendanube, Drupal and Joomla, in addition to an API for direct integrations. The intention is to minimize friction to add sites and expand the diffusion network.

The organization emphasizes that the tool is free, does not affect the operation of the site and is only activated when a visitor enters a non-existent URL. In technical terms, the file is lightweight and does not require subsequent maintenance. In practical terms, each new domain added multiplies the chances of a search reaching the right screen at the right time.

The most relevant feature of the relaunch is the integration with Alerta Sofía, the national emergency system for urgent searches for minors, inspired by the American AMBER Alert model and created from the case of Sofía Herrera, who disappeared in 2008 in Tierra del Fuego.

When authorities activate a Sofia Alert, Not Found can automatically convert all 404 pages of participating sites into a single digital poster: same photo, same name, same contact number. Everything happens without manual intervention from the administrators of each website.

Thus, a dispersed network of private sites can function as a massive and coordinated dissemination channel. “The true innovation of this project is the synergy. The State provides rigor and urgency through the official base of the Ministry of Justice, and the private sector provides the digital highway so that this alert reaches millions of screens,” explained Monastersky.

Once the alert concludes, the system automatically returns to its normal operation and resumes viewing the regular records of the official registry.

Behind this automation there is a monitoring system that reviews three official sources every six hours: the Ministry of Security, the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PROTEX) and Missing Children Argentina. If changes are detected, an operator verifies the information and, if appropriate, triggers broadcasting from the network of attached 404 pages.

The new version of the platform is currently in beta phase, so its promoters anticipate that there may be adjustments in the coming months. The bet, anyway, was to come out with a functional version rather than delay the launch.

For Monastersky, the goal is to expand the network as much as possible. “Our invitation to companies is very specific: Adding your website takes five minutes of technical implementation. It is a minimal corporate effort that, in the aggregate, builds the largest social support network in the country,” he stated.

This is not the first time that Monastersky has pushed an initiative linked to technology, fraud and user protection that ends up escalating to public policy. In 2024, he was one of the main drivers of a change in a widespread practice in Argentina: that, when paying with a card in bars, restaurants and other businesses, the customer would hand over the card (and often also the DNI). and lost sight of her during the transaction.

This claim led to a resolution by the Ministry of Commerce published in the Official Gazette, which forced all businesses in the country to bring electronic payment terminals closer to the customer so that they never lose control of their card. The measure, with 180 days of adaptation, sought to reduce frauds such as the copying of data from plastic, cloning, improper charges and identity theft. Monastersky had been campaigning on the issue for years with his own campaign“Sumate al POS”until the demand ended up becoming a regulation.
