Mozilla accuses Microsoft of imposing Copilot on users and limiting their ability to choose over AI

Mozilla has accused Microsoft of impose Copilot on userst hereby limiting its choice with artificial intelligence (AI), even after the technology giant has decided to remove this feature from some of its tools.

Microsoft shared in March that they were going to rethink their strategy with generative AI, after integrating Copilot into Windows 11, Microsoft 365 y in basic operating system applications such as Paint or Notepad.

The rejection by users led the company to rectify and implement AI “where it is needed most, with care and attention”, which also means eliminating “unnecessary” access points to Copilot in Photos, Widgets or Notepad.

For Mozilla, this “is just the latest example of Microsoft going too far without user consent“, as he expressed in an editorial published on his official blog.

“During the last year, Copilot was not offered to Windows users, but was installed automatically,” says the company, which highlights that this is an example of Microsoft’s way of acting.

Based on independent research commissioned by Mozilla, this company assures that “Microsoft uses design and distribution tactics to override user choice, from deliberately complicated processes for changing the default browser to user interfaces that redirect users to Microsoft’s Edge browser even after they have explicitly chosen another one.”

“The launch of Copilot followed the same strategy that Microsoft has accustomed us to: using automatic installations, physical hardware and default configurations to impose behaviors,” they add, and even denounce that “in the most recent case, they allowed their AI to learn and collect data as quickly as possible before users had the option to choose“.

AI, AT USERS’ CHOICE

Faced with Microsoft’s strategy, Mozilla defends its position, by which It is the users who set the conditions with AI, not the company. In December, the new CEO of Mozilla Corporation, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, assured that Firefox will become a modern browser with AI and compatible with new software additions.

But then he already defended that AI “should always be an option, something that people can easily turn off“, for which they will accompany this new stage of the browser with a switch that will allow you to disable all the features and functions that use this technology, which has already been introduced with the Firefox 148 version and which maintains the configuration after closing the session.
