The bicycle without wheels exists and is fully functional: what is it like, how practical is it and what speed can it reach? | TECHNOLOGY

From crazy ideas great ones are born inventions. Sergii Gordieiev, YouTuber behind the account “The Q”, a channel dedicated to engineering, science, design and more, knows this well. This unique character has previously shown some of his most curious inventions, such as the bicycle with split wheels o to bicycle con square wheels. Indeed, he has an obsession with these vehicles, and is now working on a new model, but without wheels!

Now, to be clear, although the new model does not have wheels as such, it does include a track system with a belt around it – one in front and the other in the back -, as if it were a tank. In this way, a great grip on the surface is obtained.

As can be seen in the video below, the bicycle is fully functional, although it is probably not the most practical solution in the world, especially considering the maximum speed at which it can move and the difficulty it has in turning. The reduced contact surface with the ground that these caterpillars have does not help. And although it is not specified what speed is reached, you don’t have to be too much of a genius to realize that it is much lower than that of a traditional design.

As usual, the YouTuber shows in his video the entire manufacturing process of the vehicle, focused in this case on the creation of the caterpillar wheels and their subsequent installation on the bicycle frame. To conclude, he ends up demonstrating the proper functioning of his invention and the ability to move the vehicle with some ease both forward and backward.

We are not looking at a design that is going to hit the market, at least for now, it is an experimental model and is hardly a competition to the typical bicycle with wheels. As the inventor said “Why did we do it? Just for fun 😅🤪”.
