Microsoft postpones the launch of the Recall function, which will arrive “in the coming weeks”

Microsoft has announced an extension in the launch of the feature powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) Recall, which will arrive “in the coming weeks” despite the fact that its arrival was scheduled for June 18.

The firm announced Recall at the end of last May, when it presented it as a new functionality integrated into the new Copilot+ PCs and activated automatically, which uses AI to create a photographic memory system.

This allows users to search for everything they have seen or done on the computer, so they can scroll through a timeline to find content they have previously searched for in any application, document or website. All this is possible because Recall uses an index that it stores locally on the device being used.

Security experts commented a few days ago that this feature could put users’ private information at risk because its operation would contain some security flaws.

After researchers like Kevin Beaumont brought these vulnerabilities to light, Microsoft released a statement saying it would make Recall “a clearer option” and that would disable it by default. Likewise, he announced that to use it it would be necessary to log in with Windows Hello.

Microsoft has now announced that it will postpone the release of this feature. While it was first going to be a “widely available” preview experience for Copilot+ PC – available starting June 18, 2024 – it will be included in the Windows Insider Program (WIP)”In the next weeks”.

Once this process has been completed and after receiving comments from community members about the functionality, it plans to bring the preview of Recall “to all Copilot+ PCs”, as stated in a statement.

The company has commented that it is “adjusting” the release model of this functionality to take advantage of the experience of the Windows Insider community and “ensure that the experience meets” with its “high quality and safety standards”.

With this, he recalled that security is his “main priority” and that it is in line with his Secure Future Initiative (SFI) and he recalled that Recall will have encryption ‘Just in Time’which will cause this photographic memory to be decrypted only with Windows Hello.
