HONOR uses AI to protect eyesight and detect video 'deepfakes' with two new functions

HONOR has announced two features powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), AI Defocus Eye Protection and AI Deepfake Detection, with which it seeks to protect users’ eyesight and help them detect video ‘deepfakes’, respectively.

The mobile manufacturer announced these features during its opening speech at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Shanghai, which has just started in that Chinese city and will run until this Friday, June 28.

HONOR has said that it has developed new features powered by AI “to empower people”, as well as to introduce a new level of security for the user, as noted in a press release.

To achieve this, it has presented two new tools that use this technology. The first of them is AI Defocus Eye Protectionwhich promotes eye health and induces a controlled blur in the user’s peripheral visual field to help them maintain clear central vision.

According to the brand, this effect creates an altered visual perception that prevents and reduces users’ transient myopia by 13 degrees and, in some cases, offers a maximum reduction of up to 75 degrees.

On the other hand, the company has developed a technology aimed at avoiding the risks presented by the ‘deepfake’ technique powered by cloud-based AI. Is about AI Deepfake Detection, which serves to prevent fraud and detect digitally manipulated content.

The tool examines information frame by frame and pays attention to details such as eye contact, lighting or image clarity, to Identify flaws that are imperceptible to the human eye.

The firm has explained that this video ‘deepfake’ detection format has been trained with a large data set of videos and images related to online scams. In this way, AI can identify a manipulated video and compare it with another in three seconds.

In a demonstration of the tool, HONOR has shared how the device warns the user that what they are seeing is possibly ‘spam’. It does so by means of a notification indicating that “it looks like the other person is using AI to change their face.”
