Apple refused to bring Meta’s artificial intelligence to its iPhones

Apple would have rejected Meta’s proposal to integrate its technology artificial intelligence in iOS 18, according to Bloomberg reports. The Cupertino company concluded that Meta’s privacy policies did not meet its standards.

According to Bloomberg, Apple decided not to accept Meta’s proposal to use its Llama language models in iOS 18. Sources close to Apple said this was due to concerns about the way Meta manages data privacy. Although there were some informal conversations between the two companies, they never formally negotiated.

These preliminary discussions took place in March of this year, when Mark Zuckerberg’s company was looking to collaborate with other artificial intelligence companies.

Currently, OpenAI is the only artificial intelligence company that has signed a deal with Apple to include ChatGPT on the iPhone, as confirmed during WWDC 2024.

According to journalist Mark Gurman, in this partnership, there is no exchange of money, which is unusual but seen as beneficial by both parties. Likewise, he adds that Apple plans to include more artificial intelligence models in iOS 18, such as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet.
