Samsung's Impulse comes to all Android smartwatches to help people with speech disorders

Samsung has announced that Impulse,the application that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a vibration system to help people with speech disorders -such as stuttering-, is now available Available for all Android smartwatches compatible with the app.

At the moment, more than 1 percent of the world’s population -that is, around 70 million people- suffer some type of disorder that can cause interruptions in speech, repetitions or prolongations of sounds, syllables or words. Some of these difficulties are found in stuttering or aphasia.

In order to improve the situation of these people, the South Korean technology company presented Impulse in April of this year. A free app that uses AI to help users improve speech fluency, through rhythmic support on the wrist provided by the smart watch.

At this time, the company unveiled Impulse for its gama de ‘smartwatches’ Galaxy Watch6 and made it available to users through free download on Google Play and the Galaxy Store, for watches compatible with versions of Android 10 and higher.

Now, coinciding with the World Aphasia Day celebration,which takes place this Friday, June 28, Samsung has announced that the application Impulse is now available to use from any smartwatch compatible with the app.

Impulse works with a algorithm based on Natural Language Processing. So, analyzes words and transforms them into rhythmic vibrations,generating a sensory pattern that acts as an invisible and silent assistant on the users’ wrists, as Samsung explained on its website.

In this way, the ‘smartwatch’ is capable of indicate to the user the tempo of each phoneme or word through vibrations that the person notices on his or her wrist discreetly. In addition, this aid is adapts depending on the particularities of the patient’s disorder.

With all this, Samsung has emphasized that, through this physical support offered by vibration, the user can recognize his own rhythm of speech, which allows him to avoid blocks in diction and facilitate fluidity in your speech.

This application, which can also be used on Android devices,not only offers help when speaking, but also includes over 250 rhythm and tone exercises, which increase in difficulty as the user progresses in their speech control.

Impulse, which is part of the program Samsung Technology with Purpose, has been developed in collaboration with Speechcare & Tartamudez Center and is also endorsed by the Association of Logopedas in Spain y The Portuguese Speech Therapy Society (SPTF) in Portugal.
