Samsung: union of some 28,000 workers declares indefinite strike

Workers at Samsung Electronics in South Korea went on an indefinite strike on Monday to demand better wages, a union leader announced.

“Until our demands are met, we will fight with a general strike ‘no pay, no work,'” said Son Woo-mok, the head of the national union of Samsung Electronics.

A one-day strike took place in June, the first collective action of its kind at the company, which had been union-free for decades.

According to Son Woo-mok, Samsung Electronics’ latest offer to employees “has angered all members” of the organization, which represents some 28,000 workers.

The company has been negotiating since January and before the June strike had offered a 5.1% wage increase.

Samsung Electronics is one of the largest phone manufacturers in the world and also one of the only companies in the world that produces high-end chips used for artificial intelligence.
