YouTube will allow you to report AI videos that imitate your appearance or voice

YouTube has updated its usage policies to allow users to report that their image or voice has been used to generate content using Artificial Intelligence (AI) without their consent, giving the creator of that video a maximum of 48 hours to take action.

The company has recalled that it takes the protection of users “very seriously” and that it develops privacy guidelines with the aim of offering them the security required for a good use of the platform.

To this end, it has developed a procedure through which users can report that their image or voice has been used without their consent to generate content using AI, provided that they are “uniquely” identifiable and there is “sufficient information in the video” to allow other people to recognise them.

Once a privacy complaint has been filed, YouTube may give the user the opportunity to remove the video or edit the privacy information on it. YouTube will then notify the user of the potential violation of its rules and give them 48 hours to take action.

During this period, the creator can use editing tools such as ‘Crop’ or ‘Blur’, available in YouTube Studio. On the other hand, if the user decides to delete the video, the complaint will be closed, while if the alleged privacy violation persists, the platform’s team will review it, as explained on its support website.

The platform has provided information on the cases in which this procedure can be used, for complaints in which content is offered with personal information or synthetic or AI-generated content that resembles or sounds like the complainant.

The company also stressed that it does not accept claims made on behalf of third parties except if the person whose privacy is being violated does not have access to the Internet or a computer, is in a vulnerable situation or is a minor, among other scenarios.
