Samsung to launch an upgraded version of Bixby with generative AI this year

Samsung plans to launch an enhanced version of its Bixby voice assistant this year, which will integrate new functionalities powered by generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), with an update to come this year.

The South Korean technology firm introduced this tool in 2017 alongside the Galaxy S8, which it had developed to help users get the most out of their smartphone and which currently encompasses Samsung’s entire intelligence ecosystem.

This assistant already has a variety of functionalities, such as live translation or recommendations. It also integrates Bixby Vision, which allows you to use the phone’s camera to learn about elements of the environment and works similarly to Google Lens.

A few months ago, Samsung’s executive vice president of device business Won-joon Choi told CNBC in an interview that generative AI and large language models had led the company to “redefine the role of Bixby.”

In this way, this technology would be applied to the assistant to “be more intelligent in the future” and offer “a more natural conversation”, as well as to create an interface “compatible with products” of the brand’s ecosystem.

Now, in an interview with the same media, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, TM Roh, has commented that they are working on ““Advancing Bixby with the application of GenAI technology” and will enhance the assistant with its own large language models (LLM).

The executive also indicated that Samsung will maintain its strategy of allowing multiple voice assistants on its devices. This is the case with the most recent devices, which also have the Google Assistant.

It is worth remembering that Samsung has made its plans known after its Unpacked 2024 event, held this Wednesday in Paris. In addition, it has commented on this shortly after Apple announced that it would reinforce its assistant, Siri, with functionalities driven by AI.
