Project to build the world’s greenest 64km highway

UAEThe Green Spine Highway is 64 km long, has more than 1 million trees and can produce 300 MW of solar power, enough to supply about 130,000 homes.

Dubai’s sustainable architecture firm, URB, will build the world’s “greenest” highway in the city, Design Boom The new project, called Green Spine, is in line with the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040 – a long-term strategy to shape Dubai’s sustainable development over the next two decades.

The Green Spine will be a 64km-long highway, redeveloped from the old Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road (E311). The project aims to promote non-motorized transport and reduce carbon emissions around the city. Nearly 8 million residents will benefit from the project.

The Green Spine is powered by 100% renewable energy, primarily solar. Trains traveling along the highway can run on tracks with integrated solar panels and draw power directly from them. This technology eliminates the need for overhead power lines.

The project aims to generate 300 MW of clean solar power, enough to power around 130,000 homes in Dubai. The switch from fossil fuels to clean energy is expected to significantly reduce the city’s carbon emissions, estimated at 1,051,200 tonnes per year.

More than a million trees will be planted along the highway to increase biodiversity. The trees will surround pedestrian and cycling paths. People will be able to jog among the trees and even grow vegetables in vertical farms along the highway. “These structures are designed to improve air quality, reduce urban heat, provide residents and visitors with an accessible, safe and enjoyable route to travel and relax, thereby enhancing the overall quality of urban life,” URB said.

Green Spine uses advanced technology to manage resources efficiently. Sensors will monitor traffic and energy usage in buildings and other infrastructure, allowing for real-time adjustments. Additionally, a smart drainage system with porous surfaces will be installed to prevent flooding. The highway will also feature biofilters to transport stormwater.

Green Spine will also feature educational programs, amenities, and recreational spaces. The project is expected to foster economic opportunity and social connection. However, the project is still in the conceptual stage and development could take years. URB has not disclosed an estimated cost or development timeline.
