Google’s artificial intelligence solves problems at the International Mathematical Olympiad

DeepMind, the company of artificial intelligence (AI) Google announced Thursday that it has managed to solve problems posed during the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IOM), a step forward in the challenge that this technology faces in acquiring reasoning capabilities.

The systems AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 solved four of the six problems presented this year in this international competition aimed at high school students, reaching the same level as a silver medalist, a “great advance,” said the company.

AlphaProof solved two algebra problems and one arithmetic problem, and AlphaGeometry 2 solved one geometry problem.

The 65th International Mathematical Olympiad was held in the United Kingdom from 11 to 22 July.

This competition, which has existed since 1959, brings together high school students selected from around 100 countries.

The first version of AlphaGeometry had already solved 25 geometry problems presented in previous editions of the Mathematical Olympiad, out of a total of 30 exercises proposed, the scientific journal Nature reported in January.

“These results open new perspectives in the field of mathematical reasoning and have the potential to open new frontiers for science and technology“Google said.
