Retro DOS games come to Apple with the approval of the iDOS 3 emulator in the App Store

Before Windows dominated the market there was DOS, an operating system released in 1981 that was many people’s introduction to the reality of gaming. video games como “Doom”, “Wolfenstein 3D”, ”Alone in the Dark” y la saga de “Monkey Island”.

Now this nostalgic magic – or bewilderment and fascination on the part of younger generations – is back with the arrival in the Apple App Store of iDOS 3, an emulator that simulates a PC under the text-based operating system. This means that iPhone, iPad and MacOS users will be able to run these games, as well as DOS-compatible programs.

iDOS 3 is based on the popular DOS emulator DOSbox, but with conveniences for touch screen users such as the addition of a keyboard, mouse and virtual controller for easy video game playing.

However, using the program is more complicated than it appears at first glance, as you not only have to learn to navigate the DOS system, but also learn to upload the files you want to simulate to your Apple device. Something that, despite instructions and tips from other users, can be a nuisance for ordinary users.

Additionally, The iDOS 3 app does not come with emulation software, so it is the user’s responsibility to obtain these files in an ethical and legal manner. In that regard, many may find it more convenient to get the modernized versions of the classic games, which are abundantly available on the App Store.

Anyway, The inclusion of iDOS 3 is still a milestone in the store’s history as the second PC emulator to be approved by the demanding conditions of the Apple digital store.after the tech giant accepted the UTM SE program into the App Store in July.

This is because previously the Cupertino-based company only allowed retro video game emulators, but not programs that completely simulated the OS, under guideline number 4.7 of its guidelines for the review of applications.

Litchie, the app’s creator, was cautiously happy about the approval of iDOS 3 in the Apple store. “As much as I want to celebrate, I can’t help but be a little hesitant about the future. Are we good from here?” he wrote on his blog.

He has reason for his reservations, as in 2021 Apple pulled the second iteration of the program, called iDOS 2.

iDOS 3 It is available in the App Store for $0.99 or S/. 2.90 for users within Peru.
